In Challenges, Nova Scholars Hannah Gosnell, Susan Prescott, and coauthors explore a growing movement in agriculture that places farmers’ well-being at the center of sustainable food systems.
The authors argue that today’s ecological and social challenges—especially those affecting rural communities—call for approaches that support not only environmental health, but also the mental, emotional, and inner lives of farmers. The authors invite researchers and practitioners to broaden how they think about sustainability in food systems. By linking inner development with ecological stewardship, it suggests that caring for farmers as whole people may be essential to building food systems that are truly resilient, regenerative, and life-affirming.
