In Pediatrics, Nova Scholars Christina Bethell and Susan Prescott provide a scoping review of existing frameworks and measures for understanding and promoting flourishing in early childhood.
Across 32 studies, authors identified six frameworks and nine measures, with common indicators including healthy attachment and relationships, resilience, curiosity and engagement, and emotional well-being. The National Survey of Children’s Health Child Flourishing Index was the most frequently cited measure. The review also identified curiosity as an important additional domain and proposes a unified framework for assessing early-childhood flourishing. Because most studies came from Western, high-income countries, more research is needed across diverse settings. The findings support a positive health-promotion approach that both creates the conditions for children to flourish and measures flourishing as an outcome.
