In the BMJ Journal of Pediatrics Open, Nova Scholar Christina Bethell and co-authors explore how being heard by family and teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic affected children’s quality of life (QOL). Survey results from fifth and eighth graders in Japan showed that children who reported that their thoughts and feelings were both solicited and considered have significantly higher QOL compared to those who were self-reportedly not heard. The positive effects were most strong when both family and teachers listened, emphasizing the importance of supportive environments at home and school. Findings of this study highlight the value of recognizing children’s voices to promote their well-being.
