How do ingredients combine to create incredible flavor? What culinary techniques should you learn to make an amazing 30-minute meal? How can you master your kitchen, speak its language, and create healthy, flavorful meals without using a recipe?
Join Chef Liv Wu in this intensive, instructional, and fun course, Kitchen Jazz: Food & Flavor Fundamentals. Chef Wu’s method embraces teaching the whole person through sensory perception, culinary and tasting exercises, and knowledge of self-care and sustainability. The process injects students with excitement and enthusiasm. They leave the class with lifelong engagement to food, wellness, curiosity, and creativity.
For four days, students will receive first-hand instruction from Chef Liv and her assistants, who will guide students through the essentials of “kitchen jazz.” A college-level food literacy course designed by Chef Wu for the Google Food Test Kitchen, this course serves as a “train-the-trainer” workshop favored by health professionals and academics.
Students will Learn:
- Gastronomy – taste physiology; improving flavor perception and acquiring the language of flavor
- Culinary – ten culinary techniques and ten knife skills to make 30-minute meals from scratch
- Nutrition – nutrient density and its relationship with flavor complexity; pros and cons of various healthy eating plans
- Sustainability – soil and gut biome; flavor and compatible growing practices
- Awareness – how to increase the awareness of flavor, food choices, and well-being; nutrition research sources
This 7-unit core course is open to all levels, from novice to advanced cooks, educators, health professionals, and chef-instructors. Learners create flavor combinations, develop personal taste profiles, and flow with confidence and freedom in the kitchen. Chef instructors, in particular, love a structure with which they can guide students to recipe-free cooking. You can play food jazz and improvise around own style.
The course is divided into seven sessions, over four days: Friday from 2 PM – 6 PM; Saturday—Monday from 9:30 PM – 12 PM; 2 PM – 4:30 PM.
About Chef Wu
Liv (Olivia) Wu came to the U.S. at the age of 16. In college, she started teaching cooking techniques to friends. Later, she opened a French patisserie, catered, wrote an award-winning cookbook, and enjoyed an 18-year career as a food journalist. Liv joined Google as its Executive Chef and later became manager of its Teaching Kitchen program where she launched five global kitchens, each with an innovative curriculum. Today, she brings all this experience to every “kitchen jazz” course.
