In the Journal of Medical Internet Research, Nova Scholar Claudia Witt and coauthors explore methodological challenges in mobile health studies.
Mobile health (mHealth) uses mobile devices like smartphones to support health and healthcare, but studying its effectiveness in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comes with unique challenges. This study surveyed researchers and found that issues like measuring and defining adherence, ensuring participants use the intervention as intended, and analyzing smartphone-collected data were particularly difficult. To address these challenges, a workshop with experts led to 17 consensus-based recommendations on improving adherence measurement, defining adequate adherence, handling low adherence rates, and assessing intervention components. Authors assert that following these recommendations can improve the reliability of mHealth research and its impact on health outcomes.
