In the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, Nova Scholars Rebecca Etz and Kurt Stange and coauthors sought to better understand where people would prefer to receive health care if cost and insurance did not limit them.
In 2021, authors survey more than 1,200 adults across the United States and asked, “If you had no limits, where would you go first for most of your health concerns?”
About 49% of respondents said they would prefer to get care from a primary care provider. Others said they would choose a hospital or health system (12%), a convenient or easy-to-access source (12%), their current provider (8%), a place that offered high-quality care (8%), or a specialist (8%). A smaller number mentioned options like urgent care, self-care, alternative medicine, mental health providers, or wellness care.
This survey concluded that most people want primary care to be the main place for their health needs. Because primary care is linked to better health outcomes, the health system should make it easier—not harder—for people to choose and access it.
