In the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, Nova Scholars Rebecca Etz and Kurt Stange position primary health care as a common good. In an era of growing commodification and health care systems that are increasingly impersonal, fragmented, and inequitable, the authors argue that understanding and treating primary health care as common good could be an antidote. By investing in primary care, including primary medical care spending, support, and workforce development, and complementing with integrated support of public health and social drivers of health, U.S. health care could move toward greater accessibility, equity, effectiveness, and sustainability.
