In the book Primary Care in a Public Health Emergency, Nova Scholar Kurt Stange and coauthors investigate how a community health center (CHC) adapted its operations to meet the needs of patients and the local community during the COVID-19 pandemic.
By interviewing staff, students, and community partners, the researchers identified that the center’s success was rooted in its long-term investment in local relationships and a shared organizational vision. The findings suggest that CHCs can effectively serve vulnerable populations during a crisis by fostering a culture of continuous improvement and grassroots innovation. This chapter highlights the vital role that strong community-academic partnerships play in building a resilient healthcare workforce and ensuring health equity during public health emergencies.
