To conclude their Mission Thrive Summer experience, participants presented a community health expo this week at the Rita M. Church Community Center in Clifton Park. Through interactive exhibits and demonstrations, students shared the knowledge they’ve gained over the past five weeks. The expo attracted more than 140 attendees.
Many were children from surrounding neighborhoods who enjoyed the teenagers’ attention and especially, the delicious treats they offered. One student team created a healthy recipe for snickerdoodle cookies, and explained why its nourishing ingredients, like coconut sugar, dates, almonds, are a better alternative. Another student team educated attendees about the abundance of sugar in soft drinks and provided samples of a low-sugar beverage made with watermelon juice.
Attendees also learned how to avoid toxins in common personal care products by making eco-friendly versions at home. The students who created this booth offered samples of home-made lip balm.
