In PLOS One, Fellow Carley Riley and coauthors describe a new community-centered approach to measuring one’s sense of well-being.
Working in partnership with the YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, researchers combined community feedback with existing validated survey tools to create a measure of belonging that better reflects the experiences and priorities of the people being studied. Using a community-based participatory research approach, the team incorporated literature reviews, interviews, and other qualitative methods to design the survey. The results suggest the new tool successfully captured members’ sense of belonging within the YMCA community, while also demonstrating a faster and more collaborative model for developing community-informed research tools.
