In Pediatrics, Scholar Susan Prescott and coauthors examine frameworks and measures for early-childhood flourishing.
This review examined how early-childhood flourishing can be defined, supported, and measured in children ages 0–5. Across 32 studies, researchers identified six frameworks and nine measures, with common areas including healthy attachment, resilience, curiosity and engagement, and emotional well-being. The review added curiosity as a new domain to an existing community-informed framework and will help guide the development of a new assessment tool. Because most of the research came from Western, high-income countries, more research is needed in diverse settings. The findings support an approach that both creates the conditions children need to flourish and tracks flourishing as an important outcome.
