“As you turn the pages of this book, it will become clear that you are on a journey with a great doctor and a great healer. Professor Dieppe provides us with a unique insight into the power of healing and our potential both as patients and as doctors to achieve it.”
— from the Foreword by Dr. Michael Dixon, OBE, General Practitioner, Chairman of the College of Medicine, Health Advisor to King Charles

Healing is on many peoples’ minds today. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and a host of other disruptions and disasters, many of us feel that we need healing — in our personal lives, for the environment, and for our planet. However, healing is rarely defined, and is not often an accepted part of medicine in the West, which primarily focuses on preventing and curing disease.
In his new book, Healing and Medicine, Nova Scholar Paul Dieppe, BSc, MD, FRCP, FFPH, Emeritus Professor at the Universities of Exeter and Bristol, examines the relationship between healing and medicine through the eyes of an academic physician who changed his interests from biomedical research to healing late in his medical career. It builds on rigorous research, including from the pioneering Healing Journey study, and Paul’s personal experiences and encounters with patients, practitioners, and others for whom healing has had a particular significance.
Through moving narrative and scientific inquiry, Paul calls on modern medicine to take a more pluralistic approach to health, and accept that spirituality and healing techniques have important roles to play alongside scientific medicine. Paul’s book, which should be “compulsory reading for all health professionals… [and] anyone who has an interest in how we heal” (Dr. Michael Dixon, OBE) will change how you think about health, spirituality, and medicine.
Nova Institute President and Founder Brian Berman, MD, said, “In this book, [Paul] has courageously and creatively charted different waters, mostly unexplored and sadly neglected by the medical profession. His professional and personal journey plumbs the depths of healing, and what that actually means to each of us as people.”
