In SLEEP Advances, Nova Scholar Bud Brainard and co-authors discuss the performance effect of dynamic lighting schedules on space mission crew members. In a 45-day study, 16 crew members underwent different cycles of sleep opportunities where, during the dynamic light schedule (DLS), daytime white light exposure was blue light-enriched and light exposure three hours prior to sleep was blue light-depleted. In the standard lighting schedule, lighting remained constant. Multiple factors were measured including time into mission, lighting condition, sleep condition, and time awake on psychomotor task tests.
Results of the study found that the DLS was associated with fewer attentional lapses. Authors suggest future missions should incorporate DLS to promote circadian alignment and better performance.
